🔴 2023-07-15 & 16 | BOIAN – the oldest Romanian settlement in Canada -125 years of history. In the middle of Boian Community
In 1898, the first two Romanians from Boian, Bucovina arrived in Alberta. On December 31, 1902, application for land for the church was filed with the Department of the Interior under the provisions of the Homestead Mission Land Grant of Consolidated Ordinances of the North-West Territories. Forty acres of land was granted on November 14, 1903.
By the turn of the century, the number increased and by August 2, 1905 St. Mary’s Romanian Orthodox Church was built and blessed.
At the end of July, the church was scheduled to host a celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Romanians’ arrival in Boian.
On June 6, 2023 at 6:30 pm the historical St. Mary’s Romanian Orthodox Church of Boian tragically burnt down. Fire destroys 118-year-old Orthodox church. Unfortunately none of the contents were salvageable. The congregation has already begun the process to rebuild and is looking for any financial assistance to help complete the project.
MRTV.ca Montreal – CEO, Manager NICOLAI LAVRIC and the ORA ROMANEASCA Radio Show – journalist ADRIAN ARDELEAN made a trip, already scheduled for this year 2023, by car (covering over 3000 KM in 3 days) from Montreal to Edmonton – Alberta and then to Boian, to be present at an anniversary event that takes place every year in July in Boian – Alberta.
Two days, July 15 and 16, 2023, very loaded with emotions, events, exchange of ideas, campfire, music, good cheer, making new friends and planning new meetings at the next events for the next years.
What binds these people so much?
The fact that they are now in the 5th generation, the fact that they have a history, a religion – that is, the Orthodox Christian one, or the fact that they are now much more united after the event in which the Fire destroys 118-year-old Orthodox church, their church.
We try to highlight all these aspects and give them to you, step by step!
Here in Boian we met Canadians proud of their Romanian ancestors!
